The Importance of Children Sleeping Outdoors for Their Health and Wellbeing

At Fenton Barns Nursery we know spending time outdoors has numerous benefits for children, including improved physical and mental health. One of the most beneficial outdoor activities for children is sleeping outdoors, whether it's camping in the wilderness or simply spending the night in the back garden. We have recently included an option for our Owls (3-5 Year Olds) to sleep in the woodlands in our 'Rest Ranch'. Here are some reasons why outdoor sleep is important for children:

Benefits of Children Sleeping Outdoors:

  • Improved Sleep Quality: Exposure to natural light and fresh air can help regulate children's sleep-wake cycles, leading to better sleep quality.

  • Boosted Immune System: Being outdoors exposes children to beneficial bacteria and vitamin D from the sun, which can strengthen their immune systems.

  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety: Nature has a calming effect on children and can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, promoting overall wellbeing.

  • Connection with Nature: Spending time outdoors helps children develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and fosters a sense of environmental responsibility.

Encouraging children to sleep outdoors can have long-lasting positive effects on their health and wellbeing. It's important for us to provide opportunities for children to experience the benefits of outdoor sleep whenever possible with permission from their parents and caregivers.
